What happened to the five wonderkids Jose Mourinho tipped for success at Manchester United

Here is what happened to the five prospects Jose Mourinho tipped for big things at Manchester United.

Jose Mourinho tipped five Manchester United prospects for big things at Old Trafford and here is what happened to them.

Mourinho is currently working as the head coach of Roma in Serie A, following a stint at Tottenham Hotspur from 2019 to 2021.

Prior to his time in North London, Mourinho was tasked with bringing United back to their former glories back in 2016.

Despite winning both the Europa League and the Carabao Cup during his time at Old Trafford, the former Real Madrid and Chelsea boss was relieved of his duties in 2018, aft recording just seven wins across the opening 17 fixtures of the 2018/19 campaign.

Throughout his time across several top clubs within European football, Mourinho has given debuts to a number of top professionals, with his stint at United being no different.

Speaking during his Old Trafford reign, he said: "Probably in a few years Man United will also have half a dozen of these kids [in the team]. So when the kids are good and have potential, there is no problem."

Here is what happened to the group of players he tipped for greatness in red...

Scott McTominay

The Scotland international is enjoying one of his best seasons in a United shirt, with five goals across his 13 appearances in the top flight of English football. He has been one of the few bright sparks in a struggling Erik ten Hag side this season, having played a more advanced role to his usual defensive midfielder position.

Demetri Mitchell

The left-back was handed his debut at a similar time to McTominay but has failed to record a second appearance for the club since this moment.

After stints at Blackpool, Hearts and Hibernian, Mitchell now finds himself in League One with Exeter City.

Andreas Pereira

Another player who had to leave the club in order to find regular first team football was Brazilian playmaker, Pereira. Despite showing flashes during his time at Old Trafford, he never hit the levels that he has currently found at Fulham.

The 27-year-old is one of the first names on the teamsheet at Craven Cottage when fully fit and is a key reason that Marco Silva's side were able to avoid the drop during the 2022/23 season.

Axel Tuanzebe

Injuries have plagued the versatile defender since bursting onto the scene at United and pocketing Paris Saint Germain star Kylian Mbappe in a crucial Champions League clash.

After stints at Aston Villa during their promotion campaign and time in the Premier League, Tuanzebe would have hoped to nail down a regular starting role within the United defence. However, this has failed to materialise and he currently finds himself at Ipswich Town after leaving the club as a free agent this summer.

Tyrell Warren

The full-back departed the club in 2019 and went on to join the Class of 92-owned Salford City, where he would fail to make an appearance for the club. He has also spent time at Boston United and Halifax Town but now finds himself at Barrow, after joining on a free transfer in 2022.
