Manchester United are reportedly targeting a £100 million signing this summer - alongside a move for Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson.
United have carried interest in Anderson, who has established himself as an important player for England under Thomas Tuchel this season, since the summer.
Ruben Amorim's side ultimately decided on prioritising attacking reinforcements instead in the summer, along with the signing of goalkeeper Senne Lammens on deadline day.
A midfield rebuild is seemingly planned for the upcoming window - though the exact plan for any signings may have changed now Amorim has been sacked.

The Daily Mail reported on Wednesday that, alongside Anderson, United were planning to raid Forest if they suffer relegation to the Championship and seal a move for the midfielder's team-mate Morgan Gibbs-White.
Should Forest stay up under new boss Vitor Pereira - their fourth manager of the season - such a move will naturally be significantly harder to complete.
Football Transfers now report that United have set their sights on Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Rogers.
The 23-year-old, who is one of Villa's key players, would likely command a fee close to or exceeding the British-record £100 million that Manchester City paid to sign Jack Grealish from Villa in 2021.
It is claimed that Rogers and his family have held discussions over a potential agency change, with CAA Base named in the report.

CAA Base currently represent a number of high-profile Premier League players, including Cole Palmer, Eberechi Eze, James Maddison and Richarlison.
They also manage Bayer Leverkusen defender Jarell Quansah - formerly of Liverpool - as well as the former Tottenham and current LAFC star Son Heung-min.
Current Manchester United first team players on their books are Patrick Dorgu and Toby Collyer.
A key factor in Rogers' final decision over a move could be whether or not Aston Villa qualify for next season's Champions League.
Unai Emery's side currently sit in third place in the Premier League table, but have only won three of their last 10 matches.
They will drop below United, who are three points further back, if the Red Devils secure victory over Crystal Palace at Old Trafford on Sunday.
