Manchester United could be about to pull off one of the shock Premier League transfers of the summer after registering interest in one of England's stand-out performers.

United have been busy in the transfer market this summer, with Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans, Karl Darlow and Tynan Thompson all coming through the door.

Their business does not appear to be finished, with reports claiming that are admirers of England and Spurs defender Djed Spence.

One of the surprise inclusions in Thomas Tuchel's England squad for the World Cup, Spence proved to be one of the top performers for the Three Lions as they finished third in the North American tournament.

Spence's stock has increased massively after his World Cup displays and Football Insider say that United took notice.

The outlet say United are weighing up a move, with Michael Carrick impressed by what he saw from Spence.

The 25-year-old showed his versatility by playing at both left and right-back during the tournament, where he made eight appearances.

Spence has also courted interest from Everton and Inter Milan and is believed to be valued at £40 million by Spurs.

The former Middlesbrough and Nottingham Forest man appears to be a fan of United and hinted at his allegiance when he showed support for them in a 2019 post on X where he wrote, "CMON @ManUtd".

Man United could pounce for Djed Spence after club pulls out of race

It has been reported that Spence has been told he is not part of Roberto Di Zerbi's plans for next season.

The Italian has already reshaped his squad by splashing out £237 million on the likes of Sandro Tonali, Jan Paul van Hecke and Matheus Fernandes - who was a key target for United.

Andy Robertson, Marco Senesi and Martin Dubravka have also been signed on free transfers.

Spurs do not appear to be stopping Spence from moving on according to journalist Orazio Accomando, Inter have withdrawn from the race as they believe Spurs' valuation is too high.

They do, however, hold interest in Spurs captain Cristian Romero, who is reportedly being allowed to leave this summer and the subject of ongoing discussions.

Spurs insider Alisdair Gold has been speaking about Spence's situation and believes Spurs ought to keep hold off him following his breakthrough World Cup campaign.

Speaking on YouTube, he said: "We’ll talk about Djed a little bit and how the price tag that I’ve heard about is utterly ridiculous. I mean, utterly ridiculous.

“£25m as a price tag for him – not a chance. You’d have to be insane, Tottenham. First off, I don’t think they should sell him anyway. Have two terrific players for every position, that would be the best way to do it.

“But £25m, they signed him for a £20m package. He’s got three years left on his contract, and he’s just had a mega World Cup. Just no, don’t do it.”

Spence, who has had short spells with Rennes and Genoa, has played 85 times for Spurs in all competitions.
