Man Utd legend called out Sir Alex Ferguson in front of entire changing room after substitution cost them game

There was a tense atmosphere.

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand once called out Sir Alex Ferguson in front of the entire dressing room after believing his substitution cost them the game.

Ferdinand was one of Ferguson's key lieutenants throughout most of his 12-year stay at the club between 2002 and 2014, making over 450 appearances and winning 14 trophies at Old Trafford.

His defensive partnership with Nemanja Vidic was arguably the most accomplished in Premier League history.

But while the England star was a mainstay of the United side and the pair had a great relationship, there were occasions when he and Ferguson had disagreements.

He once told CNBC (via Daily Mirror) that he was 'upset' when the Scot decided to hand the captaincy to Gary Neville over him, and said that Ferguson didn't praise him enough while he was playing.

And speaking on 'Fozcast', the podcast hosted by his former United team-mate Ben Foster, Ferdinand recalled one moment where he called out the manager in front of the entire dressing room.

You can watch the clip below.

Although Ferdinand does not name the match in question, it appears to be a 2-1 defeat to Bayern Munich in 2010, when United went ahead through Wayne Rooney, only for Franck Ribery and Ivica Olic to score late goals to win the game for the German side.

He explained: "He made a substitution in the game that I didn't agree with. He made a substitution, and I was out on the pitch like, 'What are you doing?'

"We're winning 1-0 at the time. They came back, scored, and scored a winner late on.

"After the game, I remember walking off the pitch, I was screaming and going nuts in the tunnel.

"I came in [the dressing room], I remember it being quite quiet. But I was lost in my own mind. I remember Gary Neville holding my arm and going, 'Rio, stop. You ain't going to win this one, stop'. I was saying, 'You f***ing know, you know!"

"And I went in early the next morning and went to his office to apologise.

"He went again and went nuts, seriously. 'How dare you, in front of the team, question me and the staff'. I said, 'I still believe what I said was right, but the timing, I should have waited until you and me were alone'."
