Manchester United have reached a major breakthrough in their pursuit of Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim, according to stunning reports.

Amorim is Man United's No.1 managerial target to replace Erik ten Hag, who was dismissed on Monday.

Amid Man United's interest, the 39-year-old took charge of Sporting's cup tie against Nacional on Tuesday and spoke to the press following the game, where he touched on his future.

Ahead of their Carabao Cup clash against Leicester City tonight, the club have agreed a fee with Sporting for Amorim.

That's according to the Manchester Evening News, who claim Man United have agreed a fee to appoint the Portuguese boss and the club are now working on a deal to bring his Sporting first-team coaches with him to Old Trafford.

Carlos Fernandes and Adelio Candido, who are just 29 and 28 respectively, followed Amorim from Braga to Sporting in 2020.

Fernandes and Candido have been crucial in Sporting's success, which includes two league titles during Amorim's reign.

Amorim is highly thought of in Europe following his managerial spell in Portugal.

He was wanted by Liverpool before they appointed Arne Slot while Chelsea and West Ham United also expressed an interest in hiring him.

Reports in Portugal, meanwhile, claim Amorim is expected to stay at Sporting until the international break.

Ruud van Nistelrooy, who returned to the club as an assistant manager during the summer, has been put in interim charge and will oversee the Red Devils' cup fixture against Leicester.

He could also lead the side against Chelsea and Leicester in Premier League fixtures as well as their Europa League match against PAOK.
