Rio Ferdinand revealed what he thinks he'd be worth in today's transfer market

Ferdinand signed for Man Utd from Leeds in 2002 for a then-British record fee of £29.1 million.

Rio Ferdinand believes he would be command a nine-figure price tag and a £400,000 per-week wage if he was still playing today in his prime.

The former England international, who is widely regarded as one of the Premier League's greatest defenders, broke the British record transfer fee twice in his career – first when he joined Leeds for £18.5 million, and the other when he signed for Manchester United.

After joining United from Leeds in 2002 for a reported £29.1 million, Ferdinand would go on to spend 12 trophy-laden years at Old Trafford, where he lifted six Premier League trophies and a Champions League, amongst other titles.

More than two decades after signing for United and the former centre-back featured in a list of the most expensive Premier League signings adjusted based on inflation.

In fact, Ferdinand led the way with his then-British record €46 million move to United, which would have been worth €183 million, according to Scott Willis, who published an update based on Transfermarkt reported fees.

So, how much does Ferdinand think he would be worth in the modern market? Speaking on VIBE with FIVE in 2023, he quoted a price of £170 million and a staggering £400,000-a-week contract.

As they discussed numbers in the current market, presenter Joel Beya said: "Look at the prices now... do you know what I mean, 30 mil today..."

Ferdinand then replied: "I was 30 mil back in the day."

Fellow presenter Stephen Howson would then reference a study examining previous transfers based on inflation, stating: "21 years ago. I think you're the second or third highest, they've adjusted for inflation."

He added: "I think [Alan] Shearer's the highest and then yours is like the second or third highest. I think you're 100 million plus now with inflation."

Based on the previously mentioned list of the most expensive Premier League signings adjusted based on inflation, Shearer's then-world transfer to Newcastle would now be worth €164 million, meaning he places second in the list behind Ferdinand.

Ferdinand revealed last year that he felt the weight of expectation following his big-money move to Old Trafford.

"The pressure that [beings a world record transfer] brings is immeasurable," he said on his FIVE podcast. "Anywhere you walk... subconsciously you feel that people are looking at you, thinking and talking about the price tag.

"Whether it's going to the shops for a loaf of bread, filling your car up with petrol or walking down the road with your missus. Whatever it is, you just think all eyes are on you, and all they're thinking about is the transfer fee and the expectation."
