Manchester United fans on social media are furious with Sir Jim Ratcliffe after the club confirmed contract talks with two players.

On Wednesday United officially announced the departures of Anthony Martial after nine years at the club, as well as Raphael Varane and academy graduate Brandon Williams.

Meanwhile, academy graduates Charlie McNeill, Marcus Lawrence and Kie Plumley are also set to exit at the end of their current terms.

However United announced that discussions were being held with Jonny Evans and Tom Heaton over potential new contracts while Omari Forson has formally been offered a new deal. Discussions also remained open with Shola Shoretire over a new deal.

Indeed, the club’s decision to renew Evans and Heaton’s contracts in particular has drawn the ire of a contingent of United fans on X, formally Twitter.

One person said: “Discussions remain open with Jonny Evans and Tom Heaton over potential new contracts while Omari Forson has formally been offered a new deal. You guys are not serious yet.”

A second wrote: “Let go Varane but open to discussing a new deal for Evans. We are seriously going backwards.”

A third added: “Why will you put Evans and Heaton on consideration for offering a contract to them????

“I thought INEOS wants best in class??? I thought this would be a 'busy' summer like FAB reported??? Well, let’s see, because the same thing was reported for De Gea and he wasn’t offered a contract.”

There also remains uncertainty over Erik ten Hag’s future after the Dutchman led the club to their lowest-ever Premier League finish last term but won the FA Cup.
