Jamie Carragher makes brutal dig at Marcus Rashford over Man Utd row as Cristiano Ronaldo comparison made

Jamie Carragher did not hold back with his assessment on Man United's Marcus Rashford after he expressed an interest in a new challenge.

Jamie Carragher gave a brutal assessment of Marcus Rashford, labelling him "not that good a player" amid talk of him leaving Manchester United.

After being omitted from the matchday squad by Ruben Amorim for the derby win over rivals Manchester City along with Alejandro Garnacho on Sunday, Rashford was left out for a second consecutive game as United were beaten 4-3 by Spurs in the Carabao Cup quarter-final.

In the days following his initial snub, Rashford delivered a bombshell interview with Henry Winter where he said he is "ready for a new challenge and the next steps", appearing to hint at an exit from his boyhood club.

Rashford's situation has dominated headlines as expected and United fans made their feelings clear on the 27-year-old by unveiling a banner in the away end, which said, "Excuses, ta ra Marcus".

Former Liverpool and England defender Carragher has been vocal on the matter but speaking before the Spurs defeat, the Sky Sports pundit said he is growing tired of the headlines with Rashford and claimed he does not warrant the constant discussion unlike previous United stars.

He also urged Rashford to keep quiet after he spoke about his future and appeared to signal the end of his tenure with United.

"I feel like I've been talking about Marcus Rashford for the last week, and I've said before, he's not that good of a player for the amount of time that we talk about him," Carragher said on Sky Sports.

"Wayne Rooney was, David Beckham was, Cristiano Ronaldo was.

"I'm not for any player coming out and being critical of the club, but for Rashford to do that, to come out without the club having any knowledge of it and just announce he's basically put in a transfer request or he wants to leave the club, that leaves the club in a really poor position in terms of negotiating his exit at some stage.

"If he really believes he wants to still be a Manchester United player and he still wants to have a great career, you don't come out with a statement like that. You keep your mouth shut, you battle and you hope that you get a little chance."

What has Ruben Amorim said about Rashford's future

Rashford still has a contract until 2028 but there is talk of United considering offers of £40 million for him. But much like he said before the Spurs game, Amorim reiterated that Rashford is still in his plans at United.

"Tomorrow we have training, he will be there preparing for next game," Amorim told Sky Sports.

"He is a United player, everyone has a future at Manchester United."

United are back in Premier League action this weekend, hosting Bournemouth at Old Trafford in a 2pm kick-off on Sunday.
