Fabrizio Romano gives David de Gea update as former Manchester United goalkeeper ponders future

Fabrizio Romano gives David de Gea update as former Manchester United goalkeeper ponders future

David de Gea left Man United at the end of last season but he could have a big impact on the transfer market.

David de Gea's 12-year stint at Manchester United came to an end this summer, but that doesn't mean he's going to be out of the headlines for good.

De Gea will rightly go down as one of the Premier League's greatest goalkeepers, something that didn't look likely after an inconsistent first season in 2011/12.

The Spaniard repaid the faith of Sir Alex Ferguson over the next decade though, making 545 appearances for United and winning one Premier League title, one Europa League and one FA Cup along the way.

However, despite his knack of making heroic saves when United needed him most, mistakes started to creep into De Gea's game in recent years and he became unreliable.

When Erik ten Hag became manager and demanded his goalkeeper start attacks from the back, the 32-year-old often looked out of his depth.

With De Gea unsuited to Ten Hag's needs, United let the goalkeeper go when his contract expired at the end of last season - well, only after performing a U-turn and withdrawing a contract offer.

The Old Trafford side have brought in £47.2m shot-stopper Andre Onana from Inter Milan as his replacement, and De Gea has yet to find a new club.

That could soon change though, with De Gea attracting interest from a number of potential suitors.

According to Fabrizio Romano, De Gea's decision on his future could spark a domino effect among clubs searching for a new goalkeeper.

"David de Gea will be key part of the GKs domino in the next days. Understand he has two important bids from Saudi — as talks are ongoing," the transfer journalist Tweeted.

"Bayern also made contact with De Gea’s camp one week ago as Yassine Bounou but Raya was priority target. Raya-Bayern deal, now off."

Romano reported that talks between Bayern and Brentford for Raya collapsed on Sunday, with both club and player rejecting Bayern's offer of a loan plus option to buy.

As reported by David Ornstein, Arsenal are now considering moving for the Spaniard.

De Gea wouldn't consider joining another Premier League team, and none have shown interest in him. Saudi Arabia looks like a feasible option, but De Gea's next destination remains to be seen.
