Footage of the Anfield pitch has emerged ahead of Sunday afternoon's clash between Liverpool and Manchester United following snowy conditions in Merseyside.

Liverpool's home tie against United is scheduled to kick off at 4.30pm but after heavy snow and freezing rain overnight, the Premier League fixture is under threat of postponement.

In fact, a Safety Advisory Group reviewed the situation at 9am on Sunday morning to determine whether or not it was safe to go ahead, and a decision was deferred until 11:45am.

Liverpool released a statement at 9:31am to confirm that at this stage, the match is planned to go ahead as normal.

"Every effort is being made to get the game on," the statement added. "A further safety meeting will take place again at midday to assess the latest conditions."

Shortly after Liverpool posted the above update, Sky Sports reporter Vinny O'Connor uploaded a video that shows the current condition of the Anfield pitch. "Pitch shouldn’t be an issue," he added. "Weather still not great though!"

The footage has since become a huge talking point online, with fans expressing their thoughts on whether the game should go ahead.

One said: "Raining too, should be absolutely fine for the game to continue," and another commented: "Vinny, it’s forecast to rain and the club have said that it’s going ahead as it stands."

A third wrote: "Pitch is fine. Can’t believe they expect us to all go to work in this weather if it was a weekday but need meetings to see if people can go to a football stadium."

A fourth said: "Undersoil heating proving pointless now if a bit of snow outside can put a match in danger," and a fifth added: "Football is played outside. Weather sometimes occurs outside as well."

Manchester and Liverpool John Lennon, as well as Leeds Bradford and Birmingham airports, all closed their runways on Sunday morning due to heavy snow.

United posted a statement of their own on Sunday morning to update fans on the current situation.

It read: "Our match against Liverpool is set to still go ahead at this stage, despite snow and weather warnings in the North West today. Take care if you are travelling to the game — we will update you with the latest developments."
