Man Utd fans spot what Joshua Zirkzee did at home during Athletic Bilbao win and it speaks volumes

Zirkzee missed the game through injury.

Manchester United fans spotted what Joshua Zirkzee did during the 3-0 win over Athletic Bilbao in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final.

Zirkzee had to watch from home as his team-mates secured a crucial victory in Bilbao through a brace from Bruno Fernandes and a Casemiro header.

The Dutchman suffered a hamstring injury earlier this month, with manager Ruben Amorim confirming he will miss the rest of the season.

It was a bitter blow for the 23-year-old, who had begun to emerge as something of a cult hero among United supporters after a difficult start to life at Old Trafford.

Zirkzee has only scored three Premier League goals this season but has played an important role in cup competitions, including scoring the winning penalty in the FA Cup third round shootout win over Arsenal.

And the forward also netted in United's Europa League knockout ties against Real Sociedad and Lyon.

During the match against Bilbao, he updated his Instagram story, which showed him watching the game at home as Fernandes scored United's third goal.

He captioned the post: "My captain!!!"

The forward could also be heard loudly celebrating the goal that put United a further step closer to reaching the Europa League final.

Replying to the story, one fan wrote on Twitter: "You can tell which guys are great for our dressing room."

A second wrote: "This is who we booed in our own stadium."

And a third added: "He gets it."

United will take a three-goal lead back to Old Trafford after their success over 10-man Bilbao.

Dani Vivian was awarded a red card for a denial of a clear goalscoring opportunity, after pulling back Rasmus Hojlund while making no attempt to win the ball.

During his post-match media duties, Fernandes was involved in a frosty exchange with a Spanish reporter who claimed that while the penalty decision was correct, Vivian should not have been sent off.

Fernandes replied: "Why wasn't it a red? Do you know the rules? I'll explain.

"He tries with his feet to make a tackle, it's a yellow. But if he pushes him or does it with his hands, it's a red."
