Jamie Carragher has issued a damning verdict on what Ruben Amorim cannot do if he wants to be a success at Man Utd as comparisons with Erik ten Hag were drawn.

Carragher, 46, was discussing whether United boss Amorim, 39, should stick to his principles despite the club being in a poor run of form heading into tonight’s Premier League match against Newcastle United at Old Trafford.

So far, during his United tenure, the Portuguese has stuck to his 3-4-3 formation, which puts a huge emphasis on the wing-backs to provide width in both attack and defence.

However, after a string of bad results - including losses against Arsenal, Nottingham Forest, Spurs, Bournemouth and Wolves - fans have questioned whether Amorim's system is working at United.

But Carragher weighed in with his thoughts and even compared the new United boss to his predecessor, Ten Hag.

“I go back to Erik ten Hag, and this is a guy that had a great first season, but he actually changed his idea after the first two games,” said Carragher when speaking on Sky Sports’ MNF.

Of course, the Dutchman was known for his 'total football' like style at Ajax but after back-to-back losses against Brighton and Brentford in his first two Premier League games he changed tactics.

“And we talk about managers adapting and tweaking things, and I’m all for that," added Carragher.

"But if you’ve brought a manager in that’s been really successful with a system, and you’re bringing him to your club, you want to see that on the pitch.

“So, if the manager changes that really quickly and moves away from that, I’d be worried. I felt that was a problem for Erik ten Hag because Man United brought him in because of what he done at Ajax and he kept saying in press conferences, ‘I haven’t got the same players, I haven’t got this, I haven’t got that, I can’t play that way’.

“I always thought that was a big worry going forward…because if Ruben Amorim moves away from that, what’s the point in him being here [at Man United]? That’s what he’s about, that’s what he’s got to do.”
