Jamie Carragher has claimed that Manchester United players did not deserve what happened moments after their defeat against Crystal Palace.

Erik ten Hag’s men were not at the races from the get-go at Selhurst Park as a brace by Michael Olise plus goals from Jean-Philippe Mateta and Tyrick Mitchell sealed a 4-0 victory for Palace.

United fans vented their frustrations online after the final whistle but those who travelled to London to watch their team were in full voice despite a difficult evening.

Responding to the away crowd’s support, former Liverpool and England defender Carragher said on Sky Sports: “That’s unbelievable, isn’t it? Most teams’ away support is fantastic, they go on the road and they pay the money.

“That is absolutely fantastic from Manchester United fans because you know what? Those players do not deserve that and if they go off thinking ‘it wasn’t as bad as we think because look at the supporters’ reaction’.”

Carragher continued: “Look at that, that is unbelievable support from those lads and girls.”

Former United player Ashley Young added: “The fans are fantastic all the time and when there’s been difficult periods and difficult times they’ve always stuck by them.

“Like you say, you look at the display tonight from that Manchester United team, you probably would’ve thought most of these fans would have left the ground already but they’re not, they’re still there, they’re still singing and for them to be there is what the club is about, it’s what the fans are about and they want to see much much more than this.”

Speaking after the match, Ten Hag praised the away support.

He said: “It is clear and it is obvious, this is underperforming. We didn't act how we want to do it and it's by far not good enough. We are very disappointed, but the fans were always behind us and we keep fighting, like the fans did.

“I was really grateful [to the fans]. They back us. They see also we have our problems. You have to stick together. You have to take responsibility. The fans gave us such huge and tremendous support.”
