Erik ten Hag faces very awkward reunion with ex-Man Utd player he made huge mistake selling in new job

Erik ten Hag has been linked with a return to management.

Erik ten Hag is set to face an awkward reunion with a former Manchester United player as he continues to be linked with a return to the dugout.

Back in October 2024, Ten Hag's time in charge of United came to an end after another dismal start to the season.

The Dutchman was replaced by Ruben Amorim, who impressed during his time at Sporting Clube de Portugal.

However, Amorim has failed to turn United around as they were beaten by Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final on Wednesday night.

As a result, United will not be playing in any European competitions next season.

Meanwhile, Ten Hag's search for a new club continues after leaving Old Trafford.

Despite being linked with the likes of Feyenoord, Ajax and Borussia Dortmund, Ten Hag stated he will only return to management this summer.

Recently, he has been linked with a move to Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen, who are on the lookout for a new boss after Xabi Alonso's departure was confirmed.

On Thursday, Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg wrote: "As reported: Erik ten Hag has already signalled to Bayer 04 Leverkusen that he is ready to become head coach!

"Ten Hag has always been the clear favourite for Leverkusen, should the move for Cesc Fabregas fall through. Talks ongoing."

If Ten Hag does end up at Leverkusen, he could be faced with an awkward reunion.

Back in the summer of 2023, United sold goalkeeper Matej Kovar to Leverkusen, and in turn signed Altay Bayindir as Andre Onana's backup.

However, both Onana and Bayindir have performed below their best this season, leading to many fans wondering if selling Kovar was a mistake by Ten Hag and the club.

Since joining Leverkusen, Kovar has played a part in the club's European journey. He played 12 matches in the Europa League last season as Alonso's men went to the final.

In the 24/25 season, Kovar has made a total of 15 appearances across all competitions.
