Donny van de Beek's loan spell at Eintracht Frankfurt takes humiliating twist

Donny van de Beek's loan spell at Eintracht Frankfurt takes humiliating twist

It's yet more trouble for Donny.

Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek is continuing to struggle in his latest loan spell away from Old Trafford.

The 26-year-old joined the Red Devils from Ajax back in 2020 but has been hampered by injuries and poor form during his stint in England.

A temporary switch to Everton brought no further joy, with Erik ten Hag opting to once again offer his former Ajax counterpart a chance at redemption with Eintracht Frankfurt earlier this month.

Having started all three of the Eagles' Bundesliga outings following his move to Germany, Van de Beek was hauled off in a poor showing during his side's 1-0 win over Mainz.

Substituted at the break, the Netherlands international attempted just eight passes, with only three in the opposition half and had 14 touches altogether.

His withdrawal means the player is yet to complete a full 90 minutes for his new team, with his future beyond the summer still relatively unknown.

Frankfurt do have the option to make his switch to Deutsche Bank Park permanent in the summer, with a potential fee of just £9.5million mooted as all it would take to release him from his deal at United.

Ten Hag's tenure continues to be brought under question following their sub-par performances this season and with Ineos recent investment in the club, Van de Beek's future again looks bleak.

"He has had many injuries, first of all," Ten Hag told reporters a few months ago, when quizzed on the midfielder's future.

"From the first moment I came in here at Manchester United, he wasn't the player he was at Ajax because he was injured.

"So many times he was not available and then he struggled for a long time to recover from that injury.

"That is probably the main reason why he was not playing. We decided for a loan in the summer but it didn't come and then his opportunities are few because also we make appointments and we make agreements with players and contract players in that position. The competition was high."
