Antony lost his head after finding out he was playing left-back and one Man Utd player calmed him down

It was an unfamiliar role for Antony.

Antony had to be calmed down by a Man Utd teammate after being told to play left-back during extra-time of their extraordinary FA Cup quarter-final win over Liverpool.

United booked their place at Wembley via a 120-minute winner from substitute Amad.

Much of the pre-match discussion focused on the strength of Liverpool, who were looking to win three more trophies before manager Jurgen Klopp's departure at the end of this season.

United set the tone early, however, with Scott McTominay opening the scoring inside 10 minutes.

Liverpool grew into the contest and took the lead before half-time thanks to goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Mohamed Salah.

The Reds failed to make their second-half dominance pay, which allowed Antony to equalise from the bench late on.

It took the game to extra-time and United boss Erik ten Hag, who made several attacking changes to chase an equaliser, had to improvise.

Having already substituted Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Raphael Varane, he took off Victor Lindelof after Harvey Elliott's deflected effort put Liverpool 3-2 up.

It resulted in Bruno Fernandes partnering Harry Maguire in the centre of defence, with Diogo Dalot shifted to right-back.

United then lined up with Marcus Rashford, Amad and Alejandro Garnacho in attack.

The odd man out was Antony, who was told to stay back with Garnacho ahead of him.

Footage from inside the ground showed the Brazil international less than pleased with his manager for the decision.

After complaining to his teammates, Rashford decided to show leadership and tell Antony to settle into his new role.

Rashford scored an equaliser shortly after the restart and Amad punished a Liverpool error to snatch victory late on.

To add to the carnage, Amad received a second yellow card for removing his shirt during the celebrations.

United will now face Championship outfit Coventry City next month in an attempt to reach their second consecutive FA Cup final.

"This could be that moment where we get the belief, the energy that we can do amazing things," Ten Hag told reporters. "I think that if we can beat Liverpool the way we did, we can beat anyone."
