Rio Ferdinand goes viral with Premier League medal claim after Man City found guilty of 114 charges

Rio Ferdinand has gone viral with his reaction after it emerged Manchester City had been found guilty of all but one of the 115 charges from the Premier League.

In February 2023, City were charged financial fair play rules on 115 occasions over a nine-year period,

A three-month hearing concluded in December 2024, with a three-person Independent Commission panel tasked with deciding the verdict of the biggest case in Premier League history.

After a lack of movement in more than 18 months, The Athletic's David Ornstein broke the story that City were found guilty of virtually all charges.

No sanctions have been decided and City, who have maintained their innocence throughout the whole process, are expected to appeal.

An official comment from the Premier League has not been provided but a City spokesperson told The Athletic: "The Premier League process remains ongoing, with significant elements to be completed, and subject to strict confidentiality. As such Manchester City FC’s position remains consistent with the club’s statement of February 2023.

“The club has diligently respected due process for eight years on the basis that the Premier League board and executive would behave as an independent, impartial and fair-minded regulator, free from partisan influence.”

• Failure to provide accurate and up-to-date financial information from 2009/10 to and including 2017/18 - 54 alleged breaches
• Failure to cooperate with Premier League investigations from December 2018 to February 2023 - 35 alleged breaches
• Failure to provide accurate financial reports for player and manager compensation from 2009/10 to and including 2017/18 - 14 alleged breaches
• Breaches of Premier League profitability and sustainability regulations from 2015/16 to and including 2017/18 - Seven alleged breaches
• Failure to comply with UEFA's regulations, including UEFA's Club Licensing and Financial Fair Play regulations - Five alleged breaches

Rio Ferdinand responds after Man City found guilty in 115 charges case

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, sanctions include suspended punishments or fines to points deductions and even expulsion from the Premier League altogether.

Many parties are hoping that City are stripped of their Premier League titles. The club lifted the title on three occasions in 2012, 2014 and 2018.

Former United defender Ferdinand didn't waste any time in reacting. He took to X and wrote, "Another Premier League medal to be added to the cabinet".

Ferdinand was referring to the 2011/12 Premier League when City beat United on goal difference on the final day to claim their first league title for 44 years.

Sergio Aguero scored the title-winning goal in the 93rd minute but Ferdinand is now hopeful of adding a seventh Premier League medal to his collection.

Jose Mourinho infamously spoke about potentially getting another Premier League medal with United.

Speaking in a press conference before a clash between Fenerbahce and United in October 2024, Mourinho said: "I think we still have a chance to win that league because maybe they punish Man City with points, and maybe we win that league. Then they have to pay me the bonus and give me my medal."

Mourinho's case involves City's 2017/18 title win under Pep Guardiola. His United side finished second to a City team who amassed 100 points, the highest ever total in Premier League history.
