Fans have been reacting on social media after watching Manchester City's win over Aston Villa.

On Tuesday night, the race for the Champions League places ramped up as City welcomed Villa to the Etihad Stadium.

The hosts took the lead through Bernardo Silva in the seventh minute before Marcus Rashford made it 1-1 from 12 yards with 18 minutes on the clock.

As the clock ticked beyond the 90th minute, it looked like the points would be shared between the two teams.

However, City had other ideas as Matheus Nunes tapped home unmarked in the fourth minute of stoppage time to seal a vital 2-1 win.

As a result, the reigning champions moved up to third place in the Premier League table, with Unai Emery's men losing ground in the race for the top five.

Reacting on social media, fans have been discussing the performance produced by Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

The Argentine is technically the best goalkeeper in world football having been named the winner of the Yashin trophy for the past two years.

However, fans have been questioning the 32-year-old's recent performances after he made a mistake for Silva's opening goal.

One fan said: "Emi Martinez has fallen off recently considering how good he once was."

Another tweeted: "Some people think Martinez is better than Alisson. I'm afraid your football opinion is irrelevant if you think that."

A third fan added: "Emi Martinez winning the Yashin award 2 years on the spin will never sit right with me."

Someone else wrote: "Emi Martinez got a strong strong case to be the most overrated player in sports history."

A fifth commented: "Not a single person on the planet thinks Emi Martinez is the best keeper in the world yet he gets given the Yashin award like it was made for him lol."

Another fan said: "Emi Martinez being the best goalkeeper on the planet is the biggest myth ever. Messi's name literally elevated him."

Reflecting on his side's agonising defeat, Emery said: "We lost, but we competed very well, and we reacted after the goal fantastic, scoring one goal, drawing and we were defending very well, competing very well.

"Of course, overall, we can feel proud of everything we are doing. The supporters as well, they were with us today here, because they know as well the importance for us to play in the Premier League and, through it, to get Europe again."
