Fans have been warned by police to not fall for a Xabi Alonso scam.

Last week, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp announced his decision to leave the club at the end of the 23/24 season.

Klopp said he was ‘running out of energy’ and would not be able to do the job ‘again and again and again’.

Since the news was confirmed, former Reds midfielder and current Bayer Leverkusen boss Alonso has been tipped to become Klopp’s successor.

A lot of Liverpool fans would like Alonso to replace Klopp due to his connections with the club and the fact that he is doing an impressive job in Germany.

This has led to police publicly warning fans about a social media scam.

An online con is messaging people on Instagram from what appears to be Alonso’s account, asking them to donate 300 Thai Baht, which equates to around £6.70.

The message, according to the Daily Mirror, says: “I am Xabi Alonso, I will be in charge of Liverpool next season, but I am short of money for my flights to Liverpool.”

Due to the fact that Premier League football and Liverpool are huge in Thailand, the country’s Central Investigation Bureau has taken to Facebook to warn fans.

A statement read: “Liverpool fans, calm down. Xabi is not yet the manager, but there is already a scammer.”

Speaking during a press conference, Liverpool CEO Billy Hogan spoke about the process of appointing their new manager.

He said: “I think from our perspective, I don't want to set an expectation because it's a process we will go through.

“The way we operate as a football club is to look at all the information, the data and with due diligence and then make our decision. I can't put a time on it - it will happen behind the scenes. It's not to be a distraction... it's about the campaign continuing and the team continuing to perform.”

Hogan added: “When we have something to say, we will have something to say at that point. [It will be] the same process that brought us Jurgen and that’s something we will do in private, with the people here and ownership. When we get to the place when we have further news then we will share - but it won’t be a running commentary.”
