A Bundesliga expert has dropped an update on Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen future amid links to Liverpool.

Ever since Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp announced he is set to depart at the end of the season, Alonso has been tipped to take the reigns at Anfield.

The Spaniard, who played for Liverpool between 2004 and 2009, has guided Leverkusen to a five point lead over Bayern Munich at the summit of the Bundesliga.

And Liverpool fans are hoping Alonso will return to the Reds as manager in the summer and report his Leverkusen heroics at Anfield.

However, Sky Germany’s Felix Fischer has suggested that Alonso will remain at Leverkusen for one more season.

“I imagine he will be the Liverpool coach one day but Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes said on Sunday that he is really sure that Alonso will still be the coach next season,” the reporter said.

“All the top teams do have an eye on him. The boss of Bayern Munich will have an eye on him for some day, as well as Real Madrid.

“It’s going to be a race for Alonso. I don’t think it’ll take place in the summer, but the season after that.”

Alonso was recently quizzed on the topic of joining Liverpool next season and insisted that he remains happy at Leverkusen.

However, the 42-year-old stopped short of directly ruling out a future move to Anfield.

"At the moment I'm really happy here, I'm enjoying my work," he said. "Each day it's a challenge & we are on a beautiful journey here in Leverkusen. To be honest, I am not in that moment to think about the next step. I am thinking about where I am right now."

Meanwhile Leverkusen chief Simon Rofles insisted that he does not see Alonso leaving the club

Asked if he believes the club will retain Alonso's services in the summer, Rofles told SPORT1: "Yes. I'm sure. One [reason] is the contract. The other thing is how comfortable he feels, the family, himself and that he knows what he has in the club. He also has a very good team, we will have a very good perspective next year and there is no change in the team.

"We will definitely have a top team available next year. These are all points that, in addition to contracts, coaches like Xabi but also players who arouse interest from other clubs often keep us with us."
