Virgil van Dijk gave a spiky answer after a reporter called out his error against Everton.

Liverpool beat Everton 1-0 at Anfield on Wednesday to not only secure a big win but also bragging rights.

Diogo Jota scored the only goal of the game as the Reds moved 12 points clear of second-placed Arsenal in the Premier League table.

Everton had chances to score, including Beto's first-half attempt that hit the post.

The Dutchman's blushes were spared after Beto failed to put his side in the lead.

After 'putting Michael Owen in his place' following his claim, Van Dijk spoke to a group of reporters, including an Off The Ball journalist who asked him about his mistake that didn't prove to be costly.

A reporter asked Van Dijk: "What's going through your head after you have those moments of defensive uncertainty?"

To which the Liverpool captain replied: "That one moment..."

He added: "Well, listen... I think in football sometimes you can make mistakes. No one plays football without making mistakes. And, unfortunately, I'm playing in a position if I mishit the ball, what happens, then it could lead to a very, very big chance.

"And that's what happened. But listen whatever happens during a game there's still so much time to turn your defensive uncertainties around. And I think that's what we did. I think we didn't give much away today. It doesn't define the whole performance in my opinion."

Van Dijk was also quizzed about Caoimhin Kelleher, who started in goal for the Merseyside derby.

Asked about what the Irish goalkeeper needs to do to get more first-team football, he replied: "Be a Premier League champion, and that’s what the aim is for the rest of the season and what happens after the season, we’ll see then.

"But he has a big job on his hands now, whether he starts or has to make sure that Alisson is ready.

"We’re all committed to the club, and we all have to fight in order to get our dreams, our big dream ready.”
