Liverpool star set for crucial contract talks as 'post Klopp' action plan underway

Liverpool star set for crucial contract talks as 'post Klopp' action plan underway

Liverpool are planning for life without Klopp.

Liverpool plan to restart contract talks with a key player as part of a 'post Jurgen Klopp' action plan.

Last month saw Klopp make the shock announcement that he will leave the club at the end of the current season.

The German coach took charge of Liverpool in 2015, and in the nine years since has led them to four major titles, including the Premier League and Champions League.

Klopp cited the risk of exhaustion as his reason for stepping down, but his side are on course to give him the perfect send off.

Liverpool are currently top of the Premier League table, five points ahead of title rivals Arsenal and Manchester City.

With the Reds taking on the Gunners in a huge clash on Sunday, Klopp's side could move eight points ahead of the London club and all but end their title hopes.

Following the news that their talismanic manager will leave at the end of the campaign, Liverpool bosses are desperate to avoid an exodus of talent over the summer.

With that in mind, Football Insider has reported that the club will soon restart contract talks with Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Discussions were held with the 25-year-old - whose current deal will expire in 2025 - towards the end of last year, but no agreement was reached.

The two parties were reportedly close to agreeing a deal worth over £55 million, that would see the full-back earn more than £200,000 a week at Anfield.

If an agreement is reached then Liverpool will make the academy graduate one of the highest earners at the club.

Alexander-Arnold is one of Liverpool's best players with a unique skillset that enables him to play at right-back and in midfield. That said, in recent games he has lost his place in the starting XI to impressive youngster Conor Bradley.

He's not the only star whose terms Liverpool are looking to renew. The contract of club captain Virgil van Dijk is also set to expire in 2025, and keeping hold of him is seen as key to easing the transition into the post-Klopp era.

Mohamed Salah was repeatedly linked with a move to Saudi Arabia last month, but Liverpool are expected to push to extend his stay beyond 2025 as well.
