Steven Gerrard will go down as one of the greatest Premier League midfielders of all time - but which players does he enjoy watching now?

The former Liverpool and England star inspired the Reds to some of their finest moments, including the 2005 UEFA Champions League triumph in Istanbul.

During his illustrious career, he played against and alongside some fantastic players, from Frank Lampard to Cristiano Ronaldo.

However, since retiring and becoming a manager, the 44-year-old has been forced to watch from the sidelines.

A lot has changed since Gerrard was in his prime, but there are still several players that the Liverpool legend would love to play with.

Gerrard revealed the players he would most liked to line up alongside during an interview with Gary Neville for an episode of Overlap Xtra, and some of them may surprise you.

He chose Liverpool stars Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, as well as Manchester City maestro Kevin De Bruyne.

However, Gerrard's fourth choice was particularly shocking.

He selected Manchester United and Portugal midfielder Bruno Fernandes.

"Mo Salah, I love Bruno Fernandes, you might not agree with that but I really like him," he told former England teammate and Premier League rival Neville.

"Kevin De Bruyne for sure, 100%, I think he is one of the best in the world right now.

"Defensive wise, I think Virgil van Dijk is just out of this world."

Fernandes was part of the United side that fell to a 1-0 defeat against Tottenham in the final of the UEFA Europa League last Wednesday.

De Bruyne will leave Manchester City at the end of the season and looks likely to join Gerrard on the elite list of legendary Premier League midfielders.

However, Salah and Van Dijk have both extended their Liverpool deals, and appear set to defend their Premier League crown next term.

The Egyptian was recently named Premier League Player of the Season and is one of favourites to win the 2025 edition of the Ballon d'Or.

"I would say I never had a season like this and winning big trophies so I would say this is my best chance to get it right now while I'm in the club because it's been a crazy year, a crazy season with a trophy," Salah told Sky Sports. "It's given me a good chance [of winning the Ballon d'Or]."
