Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler set for shock new job nearly two years after brutal Saudi sacking

Robbie Fowler could be set for a surprise new role in management.

Robbie Fowler's nomadic managerial career could take a surprise twist two years after his last job in Saudi Arabia.

Fowler scored 128 goals for Liverpool across two spells before representing Leeds, and Manchester City among others in his 19-year career.

Since retiring in 2012, he has attempted a career in management first at Muangthong United where he ended his playing career, before brief spells at Brisbane Roar and East Bengal. However, neither spell lasted more than a year as he left Brisbane due to the Covid-19 pandemic and Bengal when he managed just three wins from 20 matches.

He took a break from coaching after leaving East Bengal, returning two years later for a shock role at Al-Qadsiah in the Saudi Arabian second division but that would only last four months.

His form was slightly better with six wins a two draws but he had his contract cancelled, later telling the National he felt that the club wanted to follow a more 'Spanish-style model' with a new sporting director.

Now, Fowler is eyeing a return to the dugout, back in India after his spell at East Bengal. According to the Times of India, Fowler has put an application forward to become the new manager of the Indian national team, who are ranked 133rd in the FIFA rankings.

The report bemoans the lack of quality and high-profile names in the list of applicants, with another former Liverpool player also throwing their hat in the ring.

"Last year there was massive interest in the job," said a senior Indian FA official. "Many of them current national team coaches and those who had managed at the World Cup.

"This time around, there's also interest from across the world but not as many high-profile candidates."

Former Yokohama, Notts County and Oldham Athletic manager Harry Kewell is also named as a contender having also represented Liverpool and Leeds in his playing career. Like Fowler, he has rarely stayed in a job longer than a year, with his longest spell coming at Crawley Town where he managed just 57 games and shortest being his seven-game stint at Barnet.

He has also spent time as first team coach at Celtic, first under Ange Postecoglou and then briefly under Brendan Rodgers before taking the Yokohama job.

India face a difficult task to qualify for the 2027 Asian Cup, needing to win their final four games in qualifying to stand any chance of topping their qualifying group.
