Paris Saint Germain's official social media account aimed a brutal dig at Liverpool after the Reds were beaten by Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final.

Last Tuesday, Liverpool were knocked out of the Champions League at the round of 16 stage after losing to French giants PSG at Anfield.

Ousmane Dembele scored the only goal of the night to take the tie all the way to penalties, with the French side coming out 4-1 winners after Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones missed crucial spot kicks.

On Sunday, Liverpool's miserable week continued as they were beaten 2-1 by Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final.

During the match, a Liverpool fan was spotted wearing a PSG hat in the crowd with the image instantly going viral on social media.

Replying to the post, PSG's official English account aimed a brutal dig at Liverpool, writing: "If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em," accompanied by a smirking emoji.

Reacting in the comments, one fan said: "Nah this is major."

Another tweeted: "PSG admin cooked so hard."

A third fan added: "RUTHLESS."

Someone else wrote: "OMG. Not holding back."

A fifth commented: "This admin is all of us."

Reflecting on a disappointing week for his side, Reds boss Arne Slot said: "Like I said from the start, it took us seven, eight [or] nine months to lose twice in a row and that happens against two teams; one of them is fighting for Champions League, Newcastle is a very good team [and] we knew this already at St. James’ Park, and the other one is Paris Saint-Germain.

"Probably if you can beat us in that style of play you are probably the best in Europe at the moment. They still have to show if they still can do this in the upcoming two or three months. But I want to make clear one more time that the week started off really well by us beating Southampton."

He added: "That’s why we extended our lead to 12 points [in the Premier League] with nine games to go. You know if you go far in tournaments that the opposition you face gets stronger and stronger. Even Liverpool can lose football games, that’s what can happen."

Liverpool will now have to dust themselves off as they look to secure the Premier League title with just nine matches left to play.
