An unlucky punter missed out on £9,510 after he placed a bet on Luis Diaz to score for Liverpool in their Premier League clash against Spurs.

Díaz was convinced he'd opened the scoring for Jurgen Klopp's side in the first-half of Saturday's game, when he beat goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario with a cool finish.

But moments later, the assistant raised his flag – a decision that the PGMOL have since acknowledged as a "significant" human error.

PGMOL – the body responsible for referees in the Premier League – admitted their decision to disallow Diaz's goal was incorrect, saying: "PGMOL acknowledge a significant human error occurred during the first half of Tottenham Hotspur v Liverpool.

"The goal by Luis Diaz was disallowed for offside by the on-field team of match officials. This was a clear and obvious factual error and should have resulted in the goal being awarded through VAR intervention, however, the VAR failed to intervene.

"PGMOL will conduct a full review into the circumstances which led to the error."

PGMOL also confirmed that they will contact Liverpool at the conclusion of the fixture to acknowledge their error.

But that statement does little to soften the blow for Twitter user @RyanHall_10, who placed a £10 bet builder on the Spurs vs Liverpool game that included a Luis Diaz 'anytime' goal.

Hall, a Cleator Moor Celtic legend, placed the eight-fold bet featuring Cody Gakpo, Son Heung-min and Yves Bissouma on his account. And all of them played out except Diaz, who had his effort disallowed.

After the full-time whistle, Hall tagged Sky Sports and Bet365 in a tweet, writing: "Surely someone needs to pay me out for this!?"

He later spoke to SPORTbible and opened up about the situation.

"It would have changed my life," the 29-year-old said when asked about the sum. "Me and my girlfriend are looking at buying a house at the minute and £10,000 would've helped us out so much. It’s gutting that we’ve been let down by human error."

Hall added: "I’m not sure it’s Bet365’s fault because they didn’t make the decision, but obviously someone is responsible for it and they should probably pay up to be honest."

Speaking to Sky Sports after the full-time whistle, a frustrated Jurgen Klopp made his feelings clear on the offside decision.

"The offside goal. That is not offside when you see it, they drew their lines wrong," the German said.

"The ball is between Mo's legs, they drew the line wrong and didn't judge the moment when Mo passed the ball right. It is so tough to deal with it."
