David Ornstein has provided an update regarding Liverpool’s interest in Florian Wirtz.

There has been much speculation regarding the future of Wirtz, with the likes of Bayern Munich, Liverpool and even Real Madrid having been linked with the German international in the past few weeks.

And transfer guru Ornstein has shed some light on the situation, reiterating that Liverpool remain “very interested” in the player, who has racked up 16 goals and 15 assists across all competitions for Bayer Leverkusen this term.

“Clearly Liverpool are very interested, hence contacting his representatives to express that,” he explained, in an Athletic Q&A.

"As you will have seen, word from the Etihad Stadium is that Manchester City are no longer in contention, citing the overall cost of any deal.

“No such word has emerged from Anfield to date and given the unique nature of the player they’ll want to be in the mix if there is a chance to get him.”

While confirming Liverpool’s interest, Ornstein admitted that there is a lack of clarity regarding the player’s future, and that he could even remain at Leverkusen.

“Many you speak to across the industry think Bayern remain in the driving seat, others reckon he’ll go to Liverpool and some say he’ll stay at Leverkusen,” he added.

“This indicates a lack of clarity at present and that all parties are awaiting his decision.”

Liverpool fans on X have reacted positively to Ornstein’s assessment.

One person said: “I still think it’s a positive that we’ve muddied the waters for Bayern who thought it was a forgone conclusion he was theirs.

“We’ve clearly made a big enough impression that he’s having a serious think about this.”

Another added: “I have to turn off my brain for the next few days to handle this situation NGL. I'm too invested.”

A third added: “Can’t believe how impatient some people are on here. The transfer window isn’t even open yet and this is a 150m transfer, It was never gonna happen in a week.”
