Fans think Darwin Nunez dropped major hint about his future with cryptic post following Anfield friendly

The Liverpool striker has spoken out following the 4-1 over Athletic Club.

Liverpool fans are convinced that Darwin Nunez may have teased an announcement on his future with a social media post following their latest friendly match.

On Monday afternoon Liverpool beat La Liga side Athletic Club 4-1 in the first of two back-to-back pre-season friendlies at Anfield.

For the match, Reds manager Arne Slot decided to field a lineup consisting of both experienced and young players, with the likes of Alexis Mac Allister, Curtis Jones and wonderkid Rio Ngumoha in the starting XI.

Despite reports suggesting that he could leave Anfield before the transfer window closes on September 1, Nunez started the match up front for Liverpool, scoring their second goal in the match.

Shortly after the final whistle, the Uruguayan took to social media to share photos of the match, and some fans think he may be using the post as a goodbye.

If it is Slot's plan to sell Nunez this summer, replacing him with new signing Hugo Ekitike and top target Alexander Isak, then it is possible that Monday's game was Nunez's last at Anfield.

The 26-year-old has been linked with a move to Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal, with transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reporting that Nunez is currently in talks over personal terms.

Reacting to Nunez's photos on X, one fan replied: "Forever My Hermano, keep going Darwin. YNWA."

While another wrote: "Whatever happens this month, we will always appreciate your commitment to the club and the good times you gave us."

Another replied: "Great performance Darwin, thank you for giving your all for my club. Hopefully more to come hermano."

And one fan begged for him to stay, adding: "I’m on my knees for you to stay."

Nunez's goal on Monday marks his fifth in pre-season, equalling his total from the entire Premier League campaign last season.

His previous goals came as he scored a hat trick in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Stoke City before netting against Preston North End in July.

What is the latest on Alexander Isak's move to Liverpool?

Should Nunez leave Liverpool this summer, it would appear much more likely that Isak would soon come in as his replacement up front.

Several reports on Monday claimed that the Sweden international's agent was in attendance for Monday's friendly at Anfield, although this remains unconfirmed.

Throughout the summer break, Liverpool's actions in the window have made it clear that the Swedish international is their top target, with Isak also evidently keen on the move.

And with reports suggesting that Newcastle have submitted a second bid for ideal replacement Benjamin Sesko, it could be just a matter of days before Isak leaves the club to join the Reds.
