Lionel Messi has picked out his favourite goal he has scored in his stunning career.

The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner has a ridiculous tally of 821 goals for Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Miami and the Argentina national team.

He's scored on the biggest occasions, in Champions League and World Cup finals and his goals catalogue is completely unrivalled.

It would genuinely be difficult to put together a top 50 of Messi's greatest strikes but the 36-year-old was asked to go further and select his favourite ever goal in an interview with France Football.

But while he had so many different, world-class goals to choose from - there is one which Messi ranks above the rest.

Messi picked out his outrageous solo goal against Real Madrid in the 2011 Champions League semi-final, where he played a one-two with Sergio Busquets and went past virtually the whole team before squeezing the ball past Iker Casillas.

Barca went on beat Manchester United in the Champions League final at Wembley, with Messi scoring in a 3-1 win.

Messi said: "I always say that the most special goals are the important ones. To have scored a goal in the Champions League final or to have scored in the World Cup final is very special.

“A goal that I always remember and that I really like because of what it meant, is the goal I scored against Real Madrid when we beat them 0-2 at the Santiago Bernabeu in the Champions League semi-finals. But, to tell you one, I would stick with that one.”

Messi's answer has changed slightly, however as a few years ago he gave a different response to Mundo Deportivo.

Messi enjoyed his header against United in the 2009 Champions League final in Rome, when Xavi whipped in delicious cross to the far post for him head home a succulent header past Edwin van Der Sar.
