Former Everton and LA Galaxy star Landon Donovan has explained his new, rather peculiar, hairstyle.

Donovan’s punditry appearance on Fox Sports during France’s Euro 2024 encounter against Austria caused a stir on social media.

Indeed, fans were taken aback by the 42-year-old’s new hairstyle. Having long donned buzz-cuts and crew cuts, Donovan appeared on the channel sporting a hairstyle that featured large parts of his scalp exposed.

This prompted ex-Galaxy team-mate Mike Magee to poke fun at Donovan on X, formally Twitter, and share the exchange of texts between the pair.

Magee initiated the interaction by messaging: “LD (Landon Donovan) check Twitter ASAP and prob fire your barber.”

Donovan responded by explaining that he had undergone a hair transplant weeks ago.

He said: “Where were you 7 hours ago??? Had a hair transplant procedure two weeks ago and was told it wouldn’t show up on camera.”

When Magee asked if he could publish this back and forth, Donovan responded: “Whatever, I deserve it.”

Donovan starred for the US national team during his playing career, netting 57 goals in 157 caps.

Domestically, he is an LA Galaxy legend, while also enjoying spells at Bayer Leverkusen, Everton, and Bayern Munich, among others.

Donovan will likely be on Fox Sports again in the coming days, with the Euro group stages still in full flow, while the American may also be a pundit for the Copa America, which gets underway in the coming week.

It will be interesting to see whether Donovan sports any headgear for his next appearance, or decides to own the look.
