Why Kylian Mbappe won't be allowed to wear his new mask for France at Euro 2024

Why Kylian Mbappe won't be allowed to wear his new mask for France at Euro 2024

Mbappe was seen wearing a new mask in France training on Thursday after suffering a broken nose.

Kylian Mbappe has been pictured wearing a new mask in France training at Euro 2024 - but he can't wear it in matches.

The France captain suffered a broken nose when he collided with opposing defender Kevin Danso during the 1-0 win over Austria on Monday.

Mbappe was unable to complete the match, and there were concerns about his availability for the remainder of the group stages.

A decision has to yet to be made on whether he can face the Netherlands on Friday, although manager Didier Deschamps confirmed in his pre-match press conference that the forward is 'feeling better'.

Mbappe was pictured wearing a mask featuring the white, red and blue colours of the French flag during training on Thursday.

However, he will be unable to wear that specific mask during matches at Euro 2024.

The Athletic report that UEFA have specific regulations surrounding masks, which means Mbappe's particular mask is banned from being worn.

The regulation reads that medical equipment 'must be a single colour and free of team and manufacturer identification'.

The full law is as follows: "Medical equipment (e.g.: head protection, face masks, casts, kneepads or knee braces, elbow pads): Medical equipment worn on the field of play must be a single colour and free of team and manufacturer identification.

"Items worn on legs and arms should be the same colour as the corresponding playing attire item (e.g.: elbow pads or tape used on the arm the same colour as shirt sleeves, and kneepads the same colour as shorts)."

The French Football Federation must ensure that any mask Mbappe does wear is cleared with UEFA ahead of the game, which kicks off in Leipzig on Friday at 8pm. The Athletic say that masks which will pass the regulations have already been prepared.

It is unclear as to what punishment a player or team could face if the France captain did not adhere to the regulations - but it appears that the situation is in hand.
