Gareth Southgate left fans stunned following his comment on England's midfield after their draw against Denmark at Euro 2024.

England played out a 1-1 draw with Denmark on Thursday.

Harry Kane opened the scoring as Morten Hjulmand levelled proceedings with a long-range strike.

After the result, Kyle Walker was slammed by fans on social media following his post-match interview.

And people also took exception to Southgate's comments after the Euros clash.

The Three Lions boss continued to anger fans online during his post-match press conference.

He claimed England have been trying to find a 'solution in midfield for seven or eight years' despite boasting an array of midfielders, with the likes of Kobbie Mainoo and Adam Wharton included in his 26-man squad.

"We have been trying to find a solution in midfield for seven or eight years. If we hadn't had Declan Rice, I don't know where we'd have been," he said.

"Unfortunately, Kalvin (Phillips) wasn’t a possible for us for this tournament and Hendo (Jordan Henderson) the same, so we're trying to find something different."

Southgate added: "Some of that has worked, some of that hasn't worked so well - but over the years that's been a consistent problem we've tried to find the best way of solving and we've got to do that in the coming weeks as well.

"One of our biggest problems was we weren’t pressing well enough as a team, so Trent had all sorts of problems to solve without the ball - and most of the time he did really, really well.

"But clearly you're going to see different pictures when you’re in there every week. He’s had moments where he's played the passes that we thought he could. I understand, you're always going to ask me about individuals, but the team didn't function today. That's my responsibility."

England supporters took aim at Southgate as they disagreed with his claim and criticised his selection.

One X user wrote: "Rice & Bellingham with Foden at 10. Surely one of Europe’s best midfields. I’m stunned."

A second tweeted: "You have the pick of the best midfielders on the planet."

A third added: "We have some great midfielders on the bench! A RB is not the answer."
