Enzo Fernandez breaks silence after brutal criticism over World Cup antics

As he continues to attract criticism for his behaviour at the World Cup, Argentina's Enzo Fernandez has spoken out on social media, just days after being sent off in the final against Spain.

It has been an eventful few days for the Chelsea midfielder, who made headlines on Wednesday (July 15) for his reaction to Argentina's semi-final win over England.

After scoring a long-range equaliser for Lionel Scaloni's side, Fernandez proceeded to celebrate his goal by cupping his ears in front of the crowd.

Argentina went on to secure their place in the final thanks to a late goal from Lautaro Martinez and after the final whistle, Fernandez shared a picture of himself, Lionel Messi and Leandro Paredes laughing as Oasis hit Wonderwall played over the top.

Of course, Wonderwall was England's unofficial anthem at this summer's World Cup, so his decision to mock the Three Lions was met with outrage from England supporters.

Four days later, Fernandez featured in the final against Spain but his afternoon was cut short in stoppage time, when he was shown a red card by referee Slavko Vincic.

Firstly, he was shown a yellow card for dissent against Vincic, and just 10 minutes later, the midfielder was sent off for a rash challenge on Spain defender Pau Cubarsi.

Spain's Ferran Torres went on to score in the 109th minute to secure the win, while Fernandez was criticised for his lack of composure on the biggest stage.

It was a disappointing end to the tournament for Fernandez, who has issued a statement on social media to address Argentina falling at the final hurdle.

"As time goes by, you realise there is something much bigger than just a result,” he wrote.

“For years, this group has represented us in the best possible way.

"It teaches that competing isn't just about winning; it's about giving your all for the jersey and never giving up. It has been a privilege to be part of a group that always stepped up, competed at the highest level, and defended these colours with pride, humility, and commitment.

"I want to thank all the Argentine fans. Thank you for always being there, for supporting us in every match, for the affection, for the unconditional support, and for making us feel at home anywhere in the world.

"Wearing my country's jersey is the greatest honour of my career, and I will continue to give my all every time I get to defend it."

As well as Fernandez’s sending off, Leandro Paredes was accused of throwing a punch after the final whistle. Argentina were also branded a ‘disgrace’ after turning their backs on Spain when they lifted the trophy.

Although Fernandez didn’t comment directly on the controversy, FIFA has since confirmed it has launched an investigation.

“Following an assessment of the relevant match reports for the FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, and in line with article 36 of the FIFA disciplinary code (FDC), the FIFA disciplinary committee has appointed a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to investigate potential breaches of the FDC with regard to the post-match incidents,” a FIFA statement read.

“Further details will be communicated by the FIFA disciplinary committee once the prosecutor’s report has been completed.”
