World Cup 2026 prize money: How much money each nation earned

It has been a record-breaking World Cup for many reasons, including the prize money on offer.

Newly-crowned world champions Spain will take home a record-breaking prize pool of $51million (£38m) after they beat 10-man Argentina in Sunday's World Cup final.

A 106th-minute winner from Ferran Torres secured La Roja's second World Cup as they recorded a hard-fought 1-0 win over Lionel Scaloni's Argentina.

It was hardly a classic in New Jersey as both teams struggled at times, but Argentina looked down and out after Enzo Fernandez received a second yellow in stoppage time for a challenge on Pau Cubarsi.

Luis de la Fuente's men looked in control from that moment on and eased across the finish line in the final stages.

How much each Spain player will receive after winning World Cup

For reaching the final alone, every member of Spain's 26-man squad was guaranteed just over $550,000 (£408,000) before taxes, according to a report from AS.

However, after winning the trophy for a second time, that figure increased significantly, with players receiving 45% of the $51million prize money. That means each of the 26 players will pocket around $940,000 (£699,000) before taxes.

Argentina, meanwhile, will receive $34million (£25m) after falling at the final hurdle. In terms of money distribution to their 26-man squad, no confirmation has emerged regarding figures.

How much money each nation earned at World Cup

Of course, FIFA pays teams at the World Cup based on how far they progressed. Below is a breakdown of the prize pool.

  • Winners: Spain – $51m (£38m)
  • Runners-up: Argentina – $34m (£25m)
  • 3rd place: England – $30m (£22m)
  • 4th place: France – $28m (£20m)
  • 5th-8th place: Switzerland, Norway, Belgium, Morocco – $20m (£14m)
  • 9th-16th place: Colombia, Egypt, United States, Portugal, Mexico, Brazil, Paraguay, Canada – $16m (£11m)
  • 17th-32nd place: Ghana, Algeria, Australia, Cape Verde, Austria, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Senegal, DR Congo, Ecuador, Sweden, Ivory Coast, Netherlands, Germany, Japan, South Africa – $12m (£8m)
  • 33rd-48th place: Uruguay, Scotland, South Korea, Iran, Uzbekistan, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Curacao, Czech Republic, Qatar, Panama, Jordan, Tunisia, New Zealand, Haiti, Turkey – $10m (£7m)

In total, the above sums will form $703million of the $871million on offer in the prize pot. The remaining $168million (£152m) is paid out among teams regardless of performance.
