England's potential nightmare World Cup run explained after goalless Ghana draw

England were held to a 0-0 draw with Ghana at the Gillette Stadium in Boston and it could impact their World Cup route.

England's 0-0 draw with Ghana is anything but a disaster but the Three Lions may now face a much trickier World Cup run-in.

After an exciting 4-2 win against Croatia, Thomas Tuchel's side were frustrated by Ghana in Boston and failed to make it two wins out of two.

With four points from their two games, they are still good value to reach the knockout stages.

Yet finishing second, which is now very much a possibility, will produce a completely different route.

What happens if England finish second in Group L?

This would mean they would play in the round of 32 at midnight in Toronto on Friday July 3.

England would take on the runners-up in Group K, with 2018 opponents Colombia currently holding the spot.

Portugal could still finish second in that group and set up a showdown with England, but they clicked into gear with a 5-0 thrashing of Uzbekistan - with Cristiano Ronaldo helping himself to a brace.

However, the big potential problem is that they would more than likely square off in a Euro 2024 rematch against European champions Spain in the round of 16 should they top Group H.

Co-hosts the United States are a possible quarter-final opponent should England see off Spain - while France could be waiting in the semi-finals.

England would avoid reigning champions Argentina until the final as this route sees them at the opposite end of the bracket.

What happens if England finish first in Group L?

All is not lost as should England do the business against Panama and top the group, they will be in the round of 32 at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Wednesday July 1.

As it stands, they are in line to take on DR Congo, who are one of the best third placed teams and occupy the spot in Group K.

Co-hosts Mexico could be awaiting in the round of 16 in their home ground in Mexico City - the type of fixture England would ideally want to avoid.

Brazil and Norway are possible opponents in the quarter finals and looking at the bracket even further, Argentina would appear to be the most likely semi-final opponents.

Being on the opposite side of the bracket, England would avoid France, Germany and Spain until the final on 19 July in this scenario.

What is the round of 32 draw?

The round of 32 has not yet been decided and a lot can change in the remaining group fixtures.

But the BBC have been updating a live knockout bracket which has mapped out the fixtures which will take place at the time of writing.

Germany and Scotland are slated to lock horns, with France taking on Sweden and South Korea vs Switzerland and Netherlands vs Morocco two of the other mooted games.

As it stands, fans will have Spain vs Austria and Japan vs Brazil to look forward to, as well as an all South American affair between Argentina and Uruguay.

Draw in full:

Germany vs Scotland

France vs Sweden

South Korea vs Switzerland

Netherlands vs Morocco

Colombia vs Ghana

Spain vs Austria

United States vs Algeria

Egypt vs Czech Republic

Brazil vs Japan

Ivory Coast vs Norway

Mexico vs Cape Verde

England vs DR Congo

Argentina vs Uruguay

Australia vs Iran

Canada vs Belgium

Portugal vs Paraguay

England return to action on Saturday night when they take on Panama at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

England beat Panama 6-1 in the 2018 World Cup when they were drawn in the same group.
