World’s Most Expensive 15-Year-Old Never Represented His Country

The former Arsenal wonderkid has now retired and never represented his country in his career.

The world's most expensive 15-year-old came with huge expectation but never quite hit the heights he was supposed to.

Fran Merida started at Barcelona's academy but sought opportunities elsewhere and left for Arsenal in September in a deal said to be worth £2.88 million.

That fee remains a record for a player of that age, highlighting just how highly-rated Merida was.

After a spell in the academy set-up, he scored on his first-team debut in a friendly against Boreham Wood and signed a professional contract when he was 17 - before signing a long-term deal in 2008.

Arsene Wenger described him as "an absolutely amazing player" and Merida received comparisons to compatriot Cesc Fabregas.

But the Spaniard, who spent time on loan at Real Sociedad, only made 16 appearances for Arsenal in all competitions - with just six coming in the Premier League.

Unable to come to terms on a new deal, he signed for Atletico Madrid and spent season there before joining Braga.

Back in 2015, Merida admitted that he should never have left Arsenal at the time he did - but a lack of minutes meant he felt he had no choice.

Samir Nasri, Fabregas, Tomas Rosicky and Denilson were competing with him in midfield, while youngsters Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere were progressing.

Ex Arsenal wonderkid reflects on decision

"It was a mistake, I wasn’t patient,” he said in a 2015 interview.

“I realise that now, but I’ve never been a patient person.

“I had some opportunities but the competition was high.

“Arsenal brought Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere into the first-team. Nasri, Fabregas, Rosicky and Denilson were also in my position.

“It was difficult for me.”

Merida also turned out for Hercules, Athletico Paranaense, Huesca, Osasuna and Espanyol before a stint in the Chinese Super League in Tianjin Jinmen Tiger, who he joined on a free transfer.

He then signed for CD Lugo in the lower echelons of Spanish football in 2024 but retired later that year at the age of 34.

Merida, who made 390 career appearances and played for Spain at youth level but not the seniors, issued a statement announcing he was hanging up his boots.

“19 years ago I left home in search of my dream and, just 17 years ago today, I achieved it, on September 25, 2007," Merida wrote, as per Diario AS.

"I have been privileged to be able to live so many experiences thanks to the ball.

"To all the people I have crossed paths with over the years in all the clubs, thank you very much! I especially want to remember my parents, thank you for always letting me be myself and being unconditionally supportive. Also to my sister Sara, for accompanying me to play the best games in the streets of the neighbourhood.

"To Antonio Lopez, for taking care of me like a brother, always being honest with me and helping me get up in my worst moment. To my wife Vanesa, for being the pillar of my life along with our daughters. And to you, grandfather. We did it!! Thank you all, from the bottom of my heart. I start new challenges…”
