What Erling Haaland’s nine-year Man City contract says about relegation after 115 charges verdict

A surprise detail of Manchester City forward Erling Haaland’s bumper contract has been made public after the club were found guilty of 114 of the 115 charges related to Premier League financial rule breaches.

On Friday (September 25), The Athletic first reported that City had been found guilty of all but one charge brought against them by the Premier League.

The sanctions have yet to be decided, with City set to appeal the verdict, although a large fine, a points deduction, the stripping of titles and even relegation all remain possibilities.

If City were relegated, most players would likely be sold or demand to leave the club. However, as reported by Spanish outlet SPORT, star man Haaland does not have a release clause in his contract in the event of City being relegated.

The Norway international penned a bumper nine-and-a-half-year deal through to 2034 in January 2025. The deal is supposedly worth £260million, equal to a basic salary of £500,000 per week.

The charges, relating to a period between 2009 and 2018 when City won three Premier League titles, were first brought against City in 2023.

A hearing took place before an independent commission in 2023 following a four-year investigation, which began after German newspaper Der Spiegel published leaked financial documents from City in November 2018.

Several Premier League sides are reportedly seeking legal advice and may take legal action for compensation.

Man City issue statement on 115 charges verdict

After the verdict dropped on Friday, City released the following statement:

“The Premier League process remains ongoing, with significant elements to be completed, and subject to strict confidentiality.

“As such, Manchester City FC’s position remains consistent with the Club’s statement of February 2023.

“The Club has diligently respected due process for eight years on the basis that the Premier League Board and Executive would behave as an independent, impartial and fair-minded regulator, free from partisan influence.”

Since the charges were brought against them in 2023, the Manchester-based club have strenuously denied any wrongdoing, claiming they have a “body of irrefutable evidence” that has been provided as part of their defence.

Here is a full breakdown of the charges laid against City by the Premier League:

· Failure to provide accurate financial information giving a true and fair view of the club’s financial position from 2009/10 to and including 2017/18 – 54 alleged breaches

· Failure to co-operate with and assist the Premier League’s investigation from December 2018 to February 2023 – 35 alleged breaches

· Failure to provide full details of manager remuneration from 2009/10 to 2012/13 and player remuneration from 2010/11 to 2015/16 – 14 alleged breaches

· Breaches of Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules from 2015/16 to and including 2017/18 – seven alleged breaches

· Failure to comply with UEFA regulations, including its Club Licensing and Financial Fair Play Regulations, from 2013/14 to and including 2017/18 – five alleged breaches
