Todd Boehly could be replaced as Chelsea chairman in three years time, it has been claimed.

The American has called the shots at Chelsea since he and Clearlake Capital bought the club from Roman Abramovich in 2022.

In the two years that have followed, the Blues have spent around £1billion on player transfers, had four managers, recorded two mid-table Premier League finishes and failed to win a single trophy

Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter were both sacked within six months of one another while Frank Lampard’s spell as interim manager was disastrous.

Former Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain manager Mauricio Pochettino is currently in charge, with Chelsea 11th in the Premier League.

Much of the blame for the Blues failings has been directed at Boehly, however.

And it has now been reported in The Telegraph that the American could leave his role as club chairman in three years due to a written agreement between Chelsea’s owners.

Said agreement dictates that owners can pass the chairmanship between them every five years, meaning that Boehly could be replaced by 2027 with Clearlake Capital’s Behdad Eghbali and Jose Feliciano having the opportunity to put forward a representative.

Of course, should Clearlake take the chairmanship, Boehly could reclaim the role in 2032.

The alleged agreement is only an option rather than an obligation, meaning Boehly could remain in charge at Chelsea should Clearlake decline the chance to put a name forward.

The Telegraph allege that Eghbali's influence inside the club has “dramatically increased” over the past year, amid much criticism directed at Boehly.

Moreover, the publication added that Boehly has no plans to pass up the role and that though there is an agreement, there is no suggestion that Eghbali and Feliciano would want to take the role up.

Both Eghbali and Feliciano have remained largely out of the spotlight while Boehly has been a regular attendee at Chelsea’s matches.
