Eagle-eyed Chelsea supporters spotted exactly what Cole Palmer posted after the Blues' 5-1 win against Southampton on Wednesday evening.

Palmer, 22, started the game as Enzo Maresca’s side put in a clinical attacking display to go second in the league.

Chelsea made ground on league leaders Liverpool, who drew 3-3 against Newcastle on the same night.

The West Londoners also went above Arsenal on goal difference.

Despite him impressing on the pitch, it was Palmer’s post-match Instagram post that really caught the attention of fans.

After the game, the England international posted several photographs of him celebrating his goal.

The picture was like what most footballers post after matches, but the caption was gold.

“Top win,” read Palmer’s caption.

“Top support. Sorry @c_nkunku (Christopher Nkunku), but my FPL managers needed me.”

Of course, the goal that Palmer was jokingly apologising for was Chelsea’s fourth of the game.

Enzo Fernandez slid the ball into Nkunku’s feet before the Frenchman controlled it and dribbled into the Southampton penalty area.

He then chopped the ball back, leaving the Saints ‘keeper, Joe Lumley, on the floor.

As Nkunku shot, Ryan Manning put in a challenge which took the sting out of the Chelsea man’s strike.

However, Palmer took full advantage by tapping home from close-range.

Nkunku commented on his teammate’s post to the amusement of fans.

“Ahah no worries, G,” the comment read.

The former RB Leipzig man had scored earlier in the game, which may have softened the blow of Palmer ‘stealing’ his goal.

Fans were quick to give their thoughts in the comments section of the post.

One said: “Thank you, Cole, that goal was needed.”

A second added: “Love you, Christo, but we need them FPL points.”

A third commented: “Saving my FPL weekly.”

While a fourth exclaimed: “Elite player, elite caption.”

As FPL fans will know, Palmer is the second-highest points earner in the game (107 points) behind Liverpool’s Mo Salah (151 points).

In his post-match press conference, Chelsea boss Maresca explained how he was “very happy” with Palmer’s performance.

“We are very happy, but Cole [Palmer], Joao [Felix], they are players that can see different things that the others are not able to see,” said the Italian.

“It doesn't mean the rest are not good.”

Next time out, Chelsea will travel to north London to face Spurs on Sunday 8 December.
