It was an afternoon to remember for Liam Delap as he made his much-anticipated debut for Chelsea in their Club World Cup clash against Los Angeles FC.

The 22-year-old, who turned down Manchester United in favour of a £30 million move to Chelsea, made a productive 26-minute cameo for Enzo Maresca's side as they came out 2-0 winners in Atlanta.

After replacing Nicolas Jackson in the second-half, the former Ipswich Town striker showcased his pace, physical presence, and ability to lead the line with a number of promising moments.

He continued to be a nuisance in forward areas and with 79 minutes played, Delap recorded his first assist for Chelsea after finding Enzo Fernandez with a perfectly-weighted cross from the right flank.

Here's how fans on social media reacted to his outing against the MLS side.

One said: "Liam Delap, I have no words. On your DEBUT? Superstar in the making," and a second commented: "I’ve seen enough Liam Delap is world class."

A third wrote: "Liam Delap is a special footballer and I feel sad for those who don’t get it yet."

A fourth said: "Seen enough in a Chelsea shirt. Delap is our front man. Nico not only has competition but Liam just went past him," and a fifth added: "Liam Delap i am already in love."

Ahead of Monday's game, Maresca boldly claimed that Delap will become a "future England number nine" and backed him to handle the pressure of leading the line at Stamford Bridge.

"I said Liam can be England's number nine when we faced Ipswich," said Maresca. "Now he is a Chelsea player, I'm going to say again, I don't have any doubt that he can be in the future England number nine.

"We won with Manchester City's Under-23s - he scored 24, 25 goals that season - so he knows exactly what we can give him, I know what Liam can give us. It's a win-win. We like Liam, Liam likes us, so it was an easy conversation."

Maresca added: "The message is always the same – you arrive, you work hard, you work more than the other No 9. The conversation with Liam has been quite clear. He was keen to join us because he knows the way we play."

Speaking in his first interview as a Chelsea player, Delap gave an insight into why he signed for the Blues.

“I just think the whole growth of the club over the last few years, the player, the manager, the trajectory they’re on, it’s going to be an incredible place for me to develop and continue to play good football," he said.

"They want to continue to win trophies, to take the club back where it belongs.”
