Eagle-eyed fans spotted Reece James' reaction to the introduction of former teammate Mason Mount during Thursday's Premier League clash at Stamford Bridge.

Mount, who joined Manchester United from Chelsea in the summer for £55 million plus £5 million in performance-related add-ons, received a hostile reception when he came on.

Despite spending more than 18 years at his boyhood club, the midfielder was jeered by many Blues supporters as he replaced Alejandro Garnacho in the 86th minute.

But the 25-year-old was applauded by one of his former academy teammates. Reece James, who has been sidelined with a hamstring injury since December, made his feeling clear.

As the appearance of Mount sparked boos from around the stadium, James could be seen applauding the midfielder – a show of respect that has been praised by many.

Here's how fans on social media reacted to the scenes.

One said: 'They’re probably best mates to be fair and I imagine he’s one of only a few who probably knows and understands both sides to the story."

A second wrote: "No wonder he’s the captain," while a third commented: "Big respect to Reece James for this."

A fourth added: "Reece James was seen applauding Mason Mount when he was subbed on. That's a leader, that's a warrior."

James penned an emotional message to Mount after he announced his decision to leave boyhood club Chelsea.

Taking to Instagram, he wrote: "Ma brother man. Where do I start. I’ve known you since 6 years old, we grew together and took similar paths in breaking into the first team. Something that seemed virtually impossible.

"I’m proud to say I done it alongside you. I’ve seen you as a little boy and watched you grow into the man and player you are today, you’ve done yourself and your family proud."

James added: "We’ve had some of the best days of our career together that’ll stick with me forever. It’s sad to say goodbye. I wish you nothing but happiness, good health and the best of luck on your new adventure! You’ll always be blue at heart!"

Mount replied soon after, saying: "My brother from day 1, so many memories shared together! So proud of you, thank you RJ."
