Fans have bizarre theory that the Champions League draw was 'rigged' to favour one team

Fans have come up with a bizarre theory on how the Champions League draw was rigged to favour one team.

On Monday, all eyes were on Nyon, Switzerland as the Champions League round of 16 draw took place.

Reigning champions Manchester City were handed the easiest tie on paper after they were drawn to face Danish side FC Copenhagen, who beat Manchester United during the group stage.

The other English representative, Arsenal, will go up against Portuguese outfit FC Porto.

Meanwhile, Paris Saint Germain, who finished second in their group, will face Spanish La Liga side Real Sociedad.

Reacting to the draw, one fan has claimed that the draw was rigged as every top got the easiest possible draw.

The fan wrote on social media: “Bro this is so rigged. Easiest possible matchmaking for all the top teams to qualify.”

Another tweeted: “Man City & their rigged draws every year.”

A third fan added: “Man City vs Copenhagen is the worst yet most predictable draw of all time.”

Someone else wrote: “No problem with the CL draw but of course of course of course City drew Copenhagen.”

Reacting to the draw, City’s Director of Football, Txiki Begiristain said: “In the group phase they played against Bayern Munich, Galatasaray and Manchester United and they went through. They were the second-best team in the group so it means a lot.

“They have been better than Manchester United and Galatasaray, two clubs with much more experience in the Champions League than them. So we have to be careful.”

Begiristain continued: “We have to take it seriously and respect what they have done. They have something very good.

“We have already played Copenhagen (in the Champions League last season) so we go back to Copenhagen which is a wonderful place to visit. They played very well at home but what happened two years ago means nothing.”
