Shocking footage shows penalty spot MOVING during Inter Milan's shootout loss to Atletico Madrid

Inter Milan missed three penalties as they exited the Champions League at the hands of Atletico Madrid.

Shocking footage has emerged of the penalty spot moving during Inter Milan's shootout loss to Atletico Madrid.

Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan played out a Champions League classic on Wednesday in the second leg of their round of 16 tie.

The Spanish side came from behind to win 2-1 on the night in Madrid, levelling the aggregate score at 2-2 and taking the tie to extra-time.

Neither side could find a winner during the additional 30 minutes, and Atleti eventually went through 3-2 on penalties.

The shootout began with emphatic spot kicks from Inter's Hakan Calhanoglu and Atleti's Memphis Depay, before the next two kicks were both saved.

Inter missed their third attempt before captain Lautaro Martinez blazed his effort over the crossbar to hand Diego Simeone's side victory.

Martinez's effort was particularly poor, but now footage has emerged that suggests it wasn't entirely his fault.

Footage from TNT Sports Brasil shows that the turf around the penalty spot moved when Martinez and Inter teammate Davy Klaassen took their penalties, causing the ball to rise off the ground at the exact moment they struck the ball.

Klaasen's penalty was saved by Atleti goalkeeper Jan Oblak, but the turf movement was worse when Martinez smashed his penalty high over the bar.

Alexis Sanchez was the first Inter player to miss, although the turf didn't appear to shift too much when his effort was saved by Oblak.

However, it is possible that the Chilean loosened the spot of turf that subsequently caught out his teammates.

Saul Niguez was the only Atleti player to miss his kick, with Depay, Rodrigo Riquelme and Angel Correa all converting from 12 yards.

Inter will be disappointed not to build on their run to the final last year, but they are set to become champions of Italy after establishing a 16 point lead at the top of Serie A.

The quarter-final draw will take place at 11am GMT on Friday, with the pathways to the semi-final and final also to be decided.
