Aston Villa fans have laid into their own player despite a historic win over Wednesday evening.

42 years after their European Cup triumph, the West Midlands outfit are back in Europe's premier club competition and hosted Bayern Munich at a lively Villa Park.

Unai Emery's men beat Swiss side Young Boys 3-0 away from home last time out and were looking to claim a huge victory.

They thought they went 1-0 up early on through Pau Torres, though VAR correctly ruled that Jacob Ramsey was offside in the build-up.

But when you thought Villa were settling for a goalless draw, super-sub Jhon Duran stepped up to the mark once again and scored a brilliant winner past Manuel Neuer.

The 20-year-old sent Villa fans into raptures with the stunning strike.

But while it was a memorable night, one Villa player did get slated online.

Leon Bailey started on the bench for the clash but was brought on 28 minutes in after Ramsey picked up an injury.

But then in the second half, the Jamaica international was substituted himself after failing to make an impact.

In what appeared to be a tactical call, the former Bayer Leverkusen man was replaced by Ian Maatsen.

And though seeing a sub come off is always a surprise, many understood the decision from Emery.

One said: "Sorry.. but Leon Bailey has offered nothing but negativity and poor defensive cover. Was looking a liability tbh. Needed to be subbed.

A second wrote: "Leon Bailey has hopped in a time machine and reverted to the player he was 2 years ago."

A third fumed: "Leon Bailey, this is one of the most disgusting, despicable, disinterested display of football I have ever seen from a player."

A fourth commented: "Leon Bailey just came on to be a blackhole to anything Villa try to do."

A fifth added: "Leon Bailey surely deserved to get his ass subbed, he was atrocious. Replaced Jacob Ramsey from the bench and Unai Emery couldn’t stand his performance then got rid of him and rightly so."

Emery will no doubt give his explanation for the sub but it certainly won't take the shine off a stunning win.
