What Man United, Arsenal and Newcastle need to do to qualify for Champions League knockout stages

Manchester United, Arsenal and Newcastle United's Champions League route explained

The Champions League last-16 is fast approaching as teams begin to secure their place in the next round.

On Tuesday night, Manchester City sealed their place in the round of 16 after beating Swiss side BSC Young Boys 3-0 at the Etihad Stadium.

Pep Guardiola’s men were the first team to qualify after winning all four of their Group G matches.

The remaining English teams, Manchester United, Arsenal and Newcastle United are yet to secure their passage to the knockout stages but here is what they need to do to qualify.

Manchester United

United were bottom of Group A after losing to both Bayern Munich and Galatasaray. However, they got a crucial win against FC Copenhagen on matchday three.

After suffering a dramatic 4-3 defeat against the Danish outfit on Wednesday night, United are now in a little bit of bother.

They are now one point behind Galatasaray and will have to beat the Turkish side in Istanbul to have a chance of advancing to the next round.

If they lose in Turkey, they will be knocked out of the Champions League.

Newcastle United

Despite being bottom of Group F after four matches, Newcastle have still got a good chance of getting through this season’s ‘Group of Death’.

If the Magpies beat Paris Saint Germain at the Parc des Princes next time out, they will overtake the French club with seven points to keep their hopes alive.

However, if PSG beat Newcastle and Borussia Dortmund beat AC Milan, Eddie Howe’s men will be out of the Champions League.

If that happens, Newcastle and AC Milan will battle for third place and a spot in the Europa League.

Arsenal

Mikel Arteta’s men are in a very good position to return to the last-16 of the Champions League for the first time since the 16/17 season.

After beating Sevilla at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night, Arsenal remain top of Group B on nine points.

However, their passage to the last-16 is yet to be confirmed after PSV Eindhoven managed to get the better of Lens.

The Gunners’ place in the knockout stages will be confirmed if they beat Lens next time out.
