A BBC commentator has been accused of making an inappropriate comment during coverage of Rangers' win over Union Saint-Gilloise on Thursday.

Rangers ran out 2-1 winners on the final matchday of the revamped Europa League, courtesy of goals from Nicolas Raskin and Vaclav Cerny.

Kevin Mac Allister bagged a late consolation for the Belgian side but it wasn't enough to stop Rangers from progressing to the Europa League round of 16 in the final automatic qualification spot.

Philippe Clement's side will face either Fenerbahce, Anderlecht, Twente or Bodo/Glimt in the next round depending on who wins those respective ties.

But a commentator working on Rangers' victory caused a stir with one sentence in particular.

An effort from Ross McCausland hit Union defender Ross Sykes square in the face and there was a brief stoppage from the referee following the block.

When the BBC Radio Scotland commentary pair saw a replay of the incident, the co-commentator appeared to mock the opposition player getting hit in the face with a comical tone.

After saying Sykes had been hit "right in the dish", he proceeded to say, "in your face" in a cartoon-like voice.

An 18 second clip from the audio feed was shared online and racked up 570,000 views, causing a huge stir amongst fans.

One fan on X said: "Wildly inappropriate commentary hahahahahaha."

Another was in disbelief, writing: "No way that is real."

A third added: "Definitely forgot to hit the mute button."

A fourth user commented: "I was listening out for some weird innuendo, that caught me off guard!"

Another tweeted: "Objectively hilarious commentary."

A final person was left speechless, replying: "What on earth."

Despite a tricky run of fixtures, 2022 finalists Rangers have performed excellently in Europe and took 14 points from eight games, winning four and drawing two.

Manager Clement is thrilled at how his team fared, particularly after playing four sides who were in the top eight.

"I'm super proud of this team not only being in the top eight but if you see how many good teams are not behind us but above us, four we played against, it gives the performance more importance," Clement said on TNT Sports.

"Maybe we don't have the talent of other teams, but it's about mentality also, it's an important quality in this club."
