Howard Webb's comments on Man Utd incident suggests Arsenal should have had a penalty vs Chelsea

The PGMOL chief may have landed himself in hot water.

PGMOL chief Howard Webb could have landed himself in hot water after referee Chris Kavanagh failed to award Arsenal a penalty during Saturday's clash against Chelsea.

The Gunners and the Blues played out an enthralling 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge. Goals from Cole Palmer and Mykhailo Mudryk gifted Chelsea a two-goal lead before Declan Rice and Leandro Trossard rescued a point for the north London side.

However, as has been the case throughout the Premier League this season, VAR took centre stage when officials decided that Robert Sanchez's late challenge on Gabriel Jesus didn't warrant a penalty.

The challenge looked to be very similar to Andre Onana's foul against Wolves on the opening weekend of the season when the Manchester United goalkeeper clattered into two opposition players in the 18-yard-box.

After the game, Webb publicly apologised to Wolves' boss Gary O'Neil for not awarding a penalty during their 1-0 defeat, promising that the PGMOL would 'learn' from the mistake.

Although it would appear officials have learnt very little since the incident after after Sanchez cleared out Jesus and Levi Colwill in an attempt to win the ball in his penalty area.

On Match of the Day, Newcastle legend Alan Shearer slammed VAR for their decision to not award a penalty.

"They should have (a penalty). There's no doubt about it," he said.

"Sanchez has just come out and he wipes him out, Jesus. What's key for me is that he catches him in the head. Look, he goes right through him here. It's a terrible challenge.

"How on earth can the VAR not think that's a penalty and the referee? He is nowhere near the ball."

Shearer then took aim at the goalkeeper for gifting Declan Rice possession in his own half, which led to Arsenal's first goal.

"They had to rely on a mistake from Sanchez," the 53-year-old added. "I mean, what on earth is he doing there? I haven't got a clue. Just clear it and get rid of it."
