Fans have been left shocked over what Mikel Arteta did which resulted in a yellow card during Arsenal's Champions League clash against Inter Milan.

On Wednesday night, the Gunners travelled to the San Siro stadium to take on Italian giants Inter in the Champions League.

After a cagey first half, the hosts were handed the perfect chance to take the lead after Mikel Merino's handball resulted in a penalty.

Turkish international Hakan Calhanoglu stepped up to make it 1-0 to Inter.

In the second half, Arsenal pushed for the equaliser but were faced with a tough Inter defence.

With 63 minutes on the clock, Gunners boss Arteta was given a yellow card by referee Istvan Kovacs after a bizarre incident.

As the ball travelled towards the technical area, Arteta put out his hand looking to catch the ball to throw back to his players.

However, the ball was still in play as Arteta went to catch the ball, leading to protests from Inter players and the referee was left with no choice but to book the Spaniard. You can watch the footage below.

Reacting on social media, one fan said: "Arteta grabbing the ball while the game’s still on hahaha."

Another tweeted: "Unlike him not to be in his technical area."

A third fan added: "Why is he outside his box again, going onto the pitch to get a touch of the ball?"

Someone else wrote: "Yellow for leaving his technical area. Yellow for entering the pitch. Yellow for handling the ball. Should have been sent off."

A fifth commented: "Using their dark arts again I see."

Another fan said: "He's got away with these f***ing antics for ages!"

After their match against Inter in the Champions League, the Gunners will be back in Premier League action this weekend when they take on Chelsea in a mouth-watering London derby.
