Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has called out Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta for his tactical decisions during his side's 1-0 defeat to Liverpool.

The Gunners fell to defeat at Anfield courtesy of Dominik Szoboszlai's stunning 32-yard free-kick on 83 minutes.

Arsenal only had one shot on goal against the reigning Premier League champions.

The narrow loss is their first of the 2025/26 season, with Arteta's side having scored six goals without conceding in 1-0 and 5-0 wins over Manchester United and Leeds respectively.

New £64 million signing Viktor Gyokeres failed to have a single shot during the 90 minutes, though was not helped by a lack of creativity among the Arsenal ranks.

Fellow new arrival Eberechi Eze produced a bright cameo off the bench in what was his Arsenal debut, but could not help the Gunners to avoid defeat against Liverpool.

There was also injury concern for Arsenal as William Saliba limped off after just five minutes following a collision with Hugo Ekitike.

After the match, United legend Schmeichel - speaking on Viaplay - savaged Arteta and Arsenal for the way in which they approached the game at Anfield.

He said: "I have never in my life, ever, wanted a team to win a game of football more than Liverpool today.

"Arsenal bring an ugly brand of football to our game. Arteta... let your team play football! Let them loose, let them be free!

"I am absolutely convinced that if Arteta does this, they will win more games."

During half-time, Schmeichel had commented: "You need two teams to give a good game of football and there is only one team trying to play football, and that's Liverpool.

"I don't want to insult Arsenal but their brand of football is so annoying to watch. It's designed to exploit opponents while watching for set pieces."
