An Arsenal fan has come up with a theory on why Mikel Arteta selected David Raya ahead of Aaron Ramsdale for their Premier League clash against Everton.

During what was a busy summer transfer window, Arsenal brought in Raya on loan from Brentford alongside the likes of Declan Rice, Jurrien Timber and Kai Havertz.

Since Raya’s move to the Emirates was confirmed, many started to speculate whether Ramsdale’s position as Arsenal’s no.1 was under threat.

Ramsdale started all four of Arsenal’s Premier League matches so far as they remained unbeaten.

However, for Arsenal’s clash against Everton on Sunday afternoon, Arteta decided to start Raya over Ramsdale.

Whilst some speculated that Raya could now be Arsenal’s no.1 for the foreseeable future, one Arsenal fan has come up with a theory.

On social media, the fan wrote: “Arteta’s starting Raya today, so he can give Ramsdale his UCL debut on Wednesday. Actually makes sense when you think about it.”

Arsenal are set to make their long awaited return to the Champions League on Wednesday as the Gunners host Dutch side PSV Eindhoven.

Ahead of the Everton match, Arteta was asked about his decision to start Raya.

He said: “I think I mentioned it that we wanted to build a squad with two quality players in each position, with different characteristics, and we have got that now.

“And to maximise that they have to play games, and we have a lot of things coming up now. And we have the same with other players we have rotated and there will be a lot of game-time in the next few weeks.”

Former England player and Sky Sports pundit, Karen Carney said: “Raya is exceptionally good with his feet and the stats are there for everyone to see but I also think it's a massive week for Arsenal.

“I think Raya has been brought in to be No 1. This is a big moment for him. I think it's a case of preparing him for the north London derby.”
